Grief is just a shadow
Casting darkness over me
It leaves me feeling stranded
And makes it impossible to see
Yet for a shadow to be able
To take form and block out sight
There must be both an object
And a source of light
But when you’re sat inside the darkness
It’s not possible to feel
The warmth of the light that’s always shining
The concept’s too surreal
How can that light exist
When the darkness seems much stronger
But trust that there will come a time
When you can endure the dark no longer
You’ll raise your head and realise
That someone’s sitting in between
The light of love and dark of grief
And you will wonder what that means
You’ll slowly get to moving
Start reaching for the sun
A speck of light will reach your skin
And healing has begun
You start to gain perspective
And move away from that dark place
The picture coming into view
As you give yourself more space
The object of your grief
That is your person that is gone
Is still right there in front of you
Now you understand the con
The grief that casts the shadow
Could only come to be
Because your love was shining
When you were both happy
The memories come rushing back
Of love so completely shared
And you’re able to bask in the light
Feeling unprepared
Most don’t have this image
Of the ones that they care for
They can’t see the shadow as
Death hasn’t knocked their door
For you it is now harder
To stay on the side the light
As you have lived on the other side
In ever lasting night
So if the shadow comes to take you
No, not an if, but when
Remember the light and the love you feel
And the sun will rise again
The grief and dark will dwindle
But the light will burn forever
Your love will keep you bright and warm
Until you’re back together
