Fear of Death

Losing someone that you love
Can stir up so much ‘stuff’
And for many men it seems impossible
To talk about that fluff

It is easier to bury it
And shove it down inside
Build a dam to hold it back
Instead of riding with the tide

I have seen the darkest days
And thought of ending everything myself
Then maybe I’d be back with you
Or just on someone’s shelf

But I made a different choice
I chose to carry on
I chose to better honor you
To sing out loud your song

I sing of joy and love and fun
For you showed me what life means
If we only have one go at this
Then we should live it full of beans

Yet my search for you continued
I still can’t let you leave
I need to know just where you are
To parent you as I grieve

I’ve seen the moment life is taken
I’ve seen that something goes away
That energy must go on
In some unseen and unheard way

Everything we experience
Is through the tools our body grants
But when our senses are taken from us
We must finally learn to dance

Moving in a different way
Outside of all we know
We become everywhere at all times
Our existence only grows

We may lose all that we have known
But we become part of something greater
Finally we can make a difference
Being a part of mother nature

Though there is no elixir of life
No magic potion or ethereal fix all
Death is not a full stop but more a comma
So throw away those crystals

Instead of seeing death as the end
Feel joy in reuniting
With those you’ve lost, grieved, and loved
Perhaps it can be exciting

So if at times your mortality
Weighs you down like anchors
Take another breath and remember
A fear of death’s for _______
