Diversion

Every person has their way
Of dealing with their grief
Diversion is the simplest
But it also acts as thief

When someone talks of one you’ve lost
And you try to change the subject
You manage again to avoid the pain
But be careful of the effect

I believe that memories are stoked
In the embers of reflection
And over time you could lose them all
With constant changes of direction

At first it’s hard to go back to
A time that caused such heartache
But try to remember the happy times
It gets easier the more you partake

To speak the names of those we’ve lost
Helps others too to share
Stories and moments that they had
And helps them see how much you care

To cry is not a weakness
I think it may be needed for us to heal
I know just how hard it can be
To open up about how you feel

But if you are not ready
If it seems like too much exertion
Just know that I’ll be waiting
When you give up the diversion
